As your battery is the most expensive part on your eBike, it is important to take good care of it so that you are able to use it for many years to come.
Our batteries are made out of lithium ion cells and the chemistry of these cells may be different than some of the other batteries out there. It is important to note that lithium ion cells do not have memory retention, so although it is recommended to charge before your first battery usage, you are not required to.
To ensure optimal battery health it is recommended to:
- Avoid storing the batteries in a hot environment. These batteries will do best to be stored in cooler or at room temperature
- Maintaining the charge of the battery to be around 20%-80% at all times. Previous research have shown that having your batteries at the extremes for too long may damage the cells. I usually keep my battery charged to around 80% and if I know I am going to be going on a ride, I will top the battery up before I leave for the ride.
- Utilize your battery at least once every month. Oftentimes when weather conditions are not optimal for outdoor riding, you may not use your eBike for several months at a time. To ensure that the cells remain active and healthy, it is recommended to use the battery every so often. Furthermore, because the batteries will naturally discharge over time, it would be a good idea to take the time to monitor if the battery is kept under a good level of charge!
A couple of extra pieces of information to keep in mind
- Batteries will have less range during the colder temperatures. If you are riding in cold winter temperatures, you may experience less range due to temperature impacting the movement of the cells. Carrying a sleeve that can insulate heat would be a good idea during these months. In the winter, battery range can drop to as much as 50%!
- Heat can do serious damage to a battery, especially during charging.
- If you notice that your battery has less than 80% of its original capacity, it may be a sign to consider getting a new one.
